hallmarking

There is still a lot of confusion about the legal hallmarking requirements for all jewellery sold in the UK. Hallmarking is required on all jewellery items described as being made from Silver as long as the silver content of the item is above a specified weight - this is currently 7.78 grams, as specified by the Hallmarking Act 1973 Version

Earring wires, lever backs and post and scroll attachments all weigh less than this requirement and, therefore, are not required to be hallmarked at this time. That said, I do not import any silver products; I only buy Silver from UK-based bullion dealers who have already had their products tested and assayed by the various UK Assay Offices and which has met the criteria needed to be called Sterling Silver
